About us

Manchester Art Directory was founded on the idea that art should be accessible to everyone. No longer do you need to be ‘in’ with the art crowd to know what’s going on – just check the Art Directory. By making the world of art simpler, we believe more people will join us

Democratizing art is our goal, whether it’s a major retrospective at the Whitworth or a first year student exhibiting in a spare bedroom, we list all shows equally

Kate Haywood

Since graduating just four years ago, Kate Haywood has emerged as one of the UK’s most distinctive and imaginative new ceramicists, showing at leading venues in the UK and abroad. She makes intriguing, surreal sculptures in finely modelled porcelain with colourful textiles, glass and metallic elements. Frequently inspired by found objects from long ago and far away, Haywood’s works are designed to engage our imagination and senses.

Combining archive footage with fiction scenes shot in China, Ten Thousand Waves alludes to both traditional and contemporary Chinese visual culture. It features leading Chinese artists and performers including actresses Maggie Cheung and Zhao Tao, video artist Yang Fudong, master calligrapher Gong Fagen, cinematographer Zha Xiaoshi and poet Wang Ping, whose verse pays tribute to the ‘lost souls' of those who died in Morecombe. The film’s score fuses Western and Eastern styles, incorporating music and original score by Jah Wobble and the Chinese Dub Orchestra as well as by the classical composer Maria de Alvear.

Talk

This series features eight sessions, stretching from the Middle Ages to the present; they are interactive, dynamic and engaging, and have been designed by art historian Sara Riccardi (History of Art MA in Rome, founder of Art Across) to create connections between the past and the present, highlighting in a chronological overview the threads linking together centuries of artistic production.

Borrowing its title from a passage in Robert Musil’s novella The Confusions of Young Törless (1906) the exhibition focuses on work that seeks to link instinct and imagination with perception and understanding, rather than indulging in critical analysis or the invention of metaphors.

Jenny Drinkwater

Introducing a new series of artwork from visual artist Jenny Drinkwater using the landscape as the basis for her investigations. Since 2014 she has built a body of work that considers the fragility of our environments, looking at the bond between urban development and natural landscapes. Raising awareness of the human impact on the landscape and how an unspoilt and untouched nature no longer exists.
